This painting depicts a cane field being burned. This is a way of life that is disappearing in the south. They burned the old cane remnants so that when the new shoots came up in the spring, they would not rot from the decaying cane from previous years. I used to see this a lot as a child and was very excited to come across this and get to paint it.
